Ashley is a freelance writer with a passion for DIY projects, natural health, and the best makeup products for oily skin.

It's that time of year again! Prep for summer with these waterproof makeup suggestions to keep you looking your best during trips to the beach, nights by the bonfire, and 100 degree music festivals!

First off, I must say this…

I’m just about done with women who scoff at wearing makeup to the beach. All of you with flawless skin will probably offer a barrage of comments on how silly it is to apply makeup before a beach trip. Must be nice to be so perfect!

The rest of us mortal beings must wear makeup (even at the beach) to avoid scaring men and little children. Heck, I still remember dreading pool parties as a teen, because I just knew there would be that one evil boy who found joy in pushing me into the water. The thought of makeup running down my face, with acne exposed for all to see, was enough to give me nightmares! Even as an adult, I’ve tried the “minimal makeup” look for the beach. It always results in people asking if I’m sick, or telling me I look exhausted. Good times.

Instead of hiding under your hat at beach time...

fake a flawless look with these waterproof products. If you follow my other HUB posts, you know I’m always on the hunt for makeup that will be long lasting on oily skin. This waterproof makeup is also just what the doctor ordered for oily skin, since regular makeup tends to disappear on us oily types. So without further ado, here is a list of must-have makeup for summer beach days.

1) Dinair Airbrush Waterproof Foundation

This is THE most water repellant foundation makeup I’ve ever used. Somehow, even though the Dinair Waterproof Foundation is water based, it still allows water to bead up and roll away. The result is long lasting foundation that won’t budge, even after taking a dip in the pool.

It can be applied with the airbrush gun, but works just as well applied with finger tips. This type of foundation will dry quickly, so just apply it to your face in sections, blending quickly. When you go to towel off at the beach, be sure to BLOT your face with a towel – do not rub. This method will absorb water without disturbing the makeup. If you don’t have a towel, just allow your face to air dry after exposure to water. With this waterproof foundation, you can apply it once & forget it!

Prevent Oily Skin & High Heat from Ruining Foundation...

Imperfections can become glaringly noticeable in the summer sun. Everything from freckles to acne to varicose veins will stand out unless you use foundation. Understandably, you don’t want your makeup to be high maintenance and streaky. The secret to keeping it locked in place? Apply transparent oil-control face powder both underneath and over your foundation. This provides a fresh matte finish and will act as a secret oil absorbent, to prevent oily skin and high temperatures from ruining your makeup. Try Mattify Cosmetics ULTRA Powder for Oily Skin, which is light weight, colorless, highly oil absorbent, and designed to multi-task as both primer and setting powder.

2) Cover Girl Lash Blast Waterproof Mascara

Otherwise known as the “orange tube mascara”, this product survives an entire day of swimming, and even holds the curl in your lashes. It is hands down the longest lasting mascara I've ever tried - and that includes pricey name brands.

To begin, curl lashes for 15-20 seconds per eye. Then apply a layer of the Lash Blast, starting at the root of lashes & wiggling up & outward. This mascara tends to cling to the wand, so if you notice a lot of excess product, wipe it from the wand with a tissue, to avoid clumping.

Why is Waterproof Mascara Important?

Just refer to the picture above! When you don’t apply some sort of makeup to enhance the eyes, the result is a sleepier, droopier looking version of yourself. To avoid looking like you just rolled out of bed, the uplifting effect of curled lashes with mascara will give your entire face a more vibrant appeal. To add extra dimension to your eyes, skip powdered eye shadow (which can smudge) and just use waterproof eye liner such as Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Liner or Wet n Wild H2O Proof Liquid Eye Liner.

3) Illuminare Cosmetics Ultimate All Day Blush

When you're in and out of the water all day, skin has a tendency to look washed out and colorless (until your tan sets in). Get a vibrant natural glow by using waterproof blush on the apples of your cheeks - for a naturally flushed look.

This creamy waterproof blush stays put all day, has an SPF of 21, is mineral based, and is highly water resistant. For light barely-there color, apply one layer with finger tips. To achieve brighter color, apply a second layer immediately afterwards.

Why is Waterproof Blush Important?

Without blush, your complexion can look dull and sallow – definitely not what you want for a day of fun in the sun! Blush adds vibrancy and youth to your look!

4) Clinique Long Last Glosswear – Lip Gloss with Sunscreen

Thanks to the hydrating, thick ingredients in most lip gloss, almost all of them will be somewhat water resistant. However, not many contain an SPF. Clinique’s Glosswear Lip Gloss is water resistant, and has a SPF 15. Lip gloss can be a bit pesky at the beach, since the sticky gloss can attract sand and strands of flyaway hair. If you would rather opt for chapstick, but still want to add some color & shine, try Softlips Tints SPF 15.

Why is Waterproof Lip Gloss Important?

It helps protect your lips from the frying sun! If you’ve ever suffered sunburn on your lips, you know how painful it can be. The end up peeling for weeks, and take forever to heal up. Prevention is key, and using a water resistant lip gloss or lip balm that includes and SPF will ensure your lips stay soft & supple!

5) Model in a Bottle Makeup Setting Spray

For the final touch of waterproof perfection, use a makeup setting spray. This will seal makeup in place, while still allowing your skin to breathe. Once all of your makeup is in place, close your eyes and mist 4-5 sprays of Model in a Bottle onto your face. Keep eyes closed for about 20 seconds, allowing the spray to dry.

Why is Makeup Setting Spray Important?

Setting spray allows waterproof makeup to be extra smudge resistant. It prevents transfer onto clothing or hands, and will keep makeup in place should you accidentally rub dry with a towel, instead of blotting. The Model in a Bottle company also offers Eyebrow & Lipstick Sealer, in case you want to go the extra mile to be sure your makeup doesn’t budge.

Additional Tip for Summer Makeup: Use Sunscreen!

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen before your foundation! Be sure to select one that is oil-free, and intended for your face. Any product that contains oil will cause your makeup to streak and run, and will break down even the hardiest waterproof foundation. Try Neutrogena Clear Face Oil-Free Sunscreen or Cotz Chemical-Free, Paba-Free Sunscreen, which are suitable for sensitive & acne prone skin.

Follow these waterproofing tips & you're sure to have long lasting makeup that will keep you looking hot all summer long!
